What does the VA consider a ratable mental illness? Well, it's basically any sort of mental health disability that's diagnosed and that can be attributed to a veteran's military service. This can include a range of different disabilities, such as anxiety-related disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, and even cognitive disorders and eating disorders like bulimia or anorexia. The important question is whether or not the disability is related to their military service. This would also include signature injuries of the current conflicts, such as traumatic brain injuries. What mental health illnesses are not ratable by the VA? One that comes to mind is personality disorders. The VA has stated that they will not grant service connection for personality disorders. This can significantly affect some of our older veterans who were discharged due to a personality disorder. Personality disorders are lifelong conditions and do not change, which is why the VA doesn't service connect them. In my experience, I have found that in some cases, personality disorders are used as an excuse to deny service connection.
